For those interested in getting more prepared, here are fantastic resources for you and your community.

Getting your Ham Radio license

More and more people are realizing the importance of Ham Radio. It is the form of communication that works when all else fails.
Hamtestonline is one of the best study tools available. It will lead you through all three levels of licensing and has simple study guides to explain all of the information. It is how I studied and passed my licenses. It does require a subscription but is good for 2 years.

If you don’t wish to subscribe, a list of all of the questions and answers on the tests can be found on the qrz.com site. And they also offer great study guides.

CERT (Community Emergency Response Team)

CERT members are trained in basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations. You will learn how to prepare for emergencies, what supplies you should NOW have in your house, how much food, how much water but most importantly, how to protect your family in an emergency. The classes are free and taught by your local fire department.

Once trained you are an asset to your home and community and can choose to be further involved in CERT events, drills and even be part of a callout team to support your local fire department.

In Los Angeles this is where you can find classes, events and resources. In other areas, just google for your local CERT organization.

MAP YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD

This a brilliant, simple way of organizing your neighborhood to help one another in case of a disaster. It neighbors helping neighbors.
